Crosscurrent plays music of or inspired by Lennie Tristano and his disciples.  Tristano (1919-1978), the great pianist and composer originating from Chicago, transformed the jazz language forever with his sophisticated and uniquely swinging style of composition and improvisation.  During his life, Tristano was an influential teacher and band leader with many great musicians/composers emerging from the “Tristano School.”  We highlight Tristano’s work as well as his band mates and students, including Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Billy Bauer, Ted Brown, and Ronnie Ball.  Our name “Crosscurrent” comes from the tune of the same name composed by Tristano and originally recorded by The Lennie Tristano Sextet for Capitol Records in 1949.  We hope to continue the restoration of Lennie Tristano’s music while implementing our own creative approach and bring it to a new audience.
